Anybody know any suppliers that provide waterborne maskants for chemical milling or owners using waterborne maskants.  Malek LLC (JV with Malek Inc, Jaffari and Elf Atochem) used to offer a WB maskant that was 5% solvent, 50% solids and 45% water compared to a normal PERC based that is as high as 80% solvent.  The other advantage was you could use only 2 dips instead of conventional 3 dip prior to chemical milling and scribing.

Malek Inc and Jaffari were being sued in 1998 by Elf Atochem.  Lost track after that. 

I also have a call in to AC Products as they used to have a WB maskant.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks. I appreciate the note.  Our Client already has a supplier that they use for similar coatings to the ones that you listed here.  I am looking for the waterborne based product that came out in the late 80s early 90s that was made more marketable in the mid 90s.  It may have disappeared from the universe since then.  The downfall of the WB maskants is the additional cure time and the operator training for application as it didnt flash off like a solvent.  I am dealing with an automatic system so that shouldnt be as big an issue though.

I called AC Products in California which does carry a Waterborne Maskant.  I has worked in the past with a Client that was going to use their product a long time ago. I spoke with Sheldon Weinstein.  I got an updated education that I thought I would share here for anyone else reading this thread:

1) Jaffari passed away and Malek is closed so the only real Waterborne supplier now is AC products and they sell very little and really only into Canada. The US market no longer uses waterbornes. It has gotten expensive and not always easy to work with.

2) Boeing used to use some waterbornes in the past but they no longer allow them.  The product leaches surfactants into the anodize baths.

3) Companies like the one I am working with can't use waterbornes because the waterbornes dont hold up in the difficult environment including forming, bonding, and aging. 

This issue is no obviously closed for me at this point.
