Topic: AIRLINE/AEROSPACE SYMPOSIUM CLEARED FOR TAKE-OFF AT SUR/FIN ’08

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 27—Alternative finishes and coatings for both commercial and military applications, as well as the emerging technologies and innovations required to apply those finishes. That is the main thrust of the SUR/FIN 2008 Airline/Aerospace Symposium, set to lift off on Tuesday, June 17, at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. These informative conference sessions, spanning two days, will focus on the key materials, coatings, and maintenance issues facing finishers, suppliers, and OEMs serving this vital end-use sector.

Following is the flight plan:

Chair:  Steve Gaydos, Boeing Corp.

“Cadmium Coating Alternatives for High-Strength Steel–Phase II” Presenters: Dr. Elizabeth S. Berman and Thomas A. Naguy, Air Force Research Laboratory, Neil Huber and Leanne Debias, Concurrent Technologies Corporation
“Properties of APCVD Aluminum Coatings–An Environmentally Acceptable Replacement for Electroplated Cadmium Coatings”  Presenter: Dr. Eric W. Brooman, Air Force Research Laboratories/RXSC
“Composites Technology for the NERVA Launcher Fuel Tanks”
Presenters: Dr. Radu Rugescu, Aerospace Engineering Department, U.P.A. Romania and Visiting Professor, Texas A&M University, Vasile Moga, U.P.A. Romania

“Laser Depainting at Air Logistics Centers”
Presenters: Thomas Naguy, Airforce Research Laboratories, Debora Naguy, Air Force Material Command, Gerard Mongelli, Randy Straw, Dr. Melissa Klingenberg, James Arthur, Shanna Denny, and Georgette Nelson, Concurrent Technologies Corp.
“UV-Curable Coatings for Aerospace Applications”  Presenters: Thomas A. Naguy, Air Force Research Laboratories, Steve Finley, Randy Straw, Georgette Nelson, and Matthew Campbell, Concurrent Technologies Corp.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 9 A.M.–2 P.M. — ROOM 120

Chair:  Frank Altmayer, MSF, AESF Fellow, AESF Foundation Technical Education Director
“Surface Finishing for Airline/Aerospace/Military MRO Boot Camp” Presenter: Frank Altmayer, instructor, will present three modules from the new AESF Foundation Course: Surface Finishing for MRO. The modules include: (1) cadmium plating; (2) chromium plating; and (3) hydrogen embrittlement. This should prove to be valuable introduction to this new AESF Foundation course and/or a worthy introduction/review of these important processes.

Concurrent Technologies Corp.’s Dr. Melissa Klingenberg, who was instrumental in lining up speakers for the Airline/Aerospace program, provides compelling reasons for attendees to participate. “This year’s Airline/Aerospace Symposium is packed with leading-edge research by the Department of Defense and private industry that spans a breadth of surface finishing and materials issues and solutions,” she explained. “Briefings include longtime interests in cadmium and chromium replacement, but also introduce innovative means of decoating aircraft, new methods for depositing high-integrity organic coatings, and information on new composite materials.”
