Topic: help please ?????????????

hey guys i am completely new at this powder coating thing and i need help please. a friend of mine gave me his WAI kit to mess with and here are the results what happened. i work in an aircraft paint shop with access to blasting and slovents so i dont think the cleaning is the issue. why on the polished panel does the clear look great but the blasted ones with orange look like SH*T lol  the 3 2024 stainless panels (1) was aluminum oxide blasted (1) was glass beaded the other jus polished and wiped with solvents dont mind the leftside i was jus messin with it. i dont think its and issue with thickness they are reading about 2-2.5 mils. any ideas, all parts were shoot and put in oven at same time 400degs for about 20min

A little Slower,

You should try entering a more descriptive title... help please dosent say much.... I would try editing your post and putting something like "Problem Coating Part - Please Help!" The more descriptive you are the higher the chance of someone helping you... Just a tip.

Hope you find the answer to your question! I'm sure one of the many powder coaters roaming the forums will be able to help.

It's a little hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like your problem is either orange peel or due to surface imperfections from the blasting.  Try running a panel with only solvent cleaning (non-abraded) with the orange powder.  If the problem goes away, it was due to your media blasting.  If the problem is still there, it is probably due to "orange peel".  There are many causes of this problem: cure time, cure temp, powder thickness, the powder itself (poor quality, lots of filler), or powder application technique to name a few.

What are the cure specs for that specific powder?  Time?  Temp?  Thickness?  Your parts look fairly thin, so actual part temperature should be pretty close to oven temp throughout the cure cycle.

Re: help please ?????????????

zurv i thought i was pretty decriptive in my message the title is jus to get people to open the thread anyways dusty the thickness of powder is 2.83 mlis with a substraight of  0.13 mil so the powder is 2.7 mils dead on for what they call out (between 2 and 2.5 mil thickness) cure at 400 deg for 15-20 min after flow out still does this over unblasted surfaces tried that all ready lol im begining to think its the cheap free powder that came with kit anyways ill keep trying different things

thanks

Hey alittleslower,

I think what Zurv was really trying to say is .....if you would have use a more descriptive header - this discussion could have not only been more helpful to other users in the future, but also would have been more read by our membership and visitors.  When a posting is made on the community bulletin board it is automatically indexed and shows up on the Finishing Talk Home Page, which is viewed by nearly 10,000 unique visitors from around the world each month.

Your situation is ideal for this forum and I’m sure you'll get the help you were looking for.

So here's my two cents...... You get what you pay for in the world of powder paint just like everywhere else.   Try different paints from different suppliers until you find what you are looking for.  We always recommend the guys at Tiger Drylac, USA,  but there are literally hundreds of other distributors around the country.  Travis Strirewalt (Instructor for the Powder Academy Course) wrote an article called On the Edge - Potential for failure that says “Poor quality powder may also be blamed for coating breakdowns due to inferior materials and a great deal of filler material.”

All of the above doesn't apply top you if in fact your pretreatment is not up to par.

You can bet we’ll be talking about this posting on a future episode of Finishing Talk Live!

Good Luck!
