Topic: How to remove powder coating residue ?

Hi guys, I just bought PERMATEX paint stripper to remove powder coating. The instructions said : "wait for 5-10 minutes and the use putty knife to remove the paint" The problem is, my powder coated area was curvy and have holes, so it was kinda hard to remove the residue (the sticky rubber-like paint)  using putty knife.

Do you guys have any recommendation to this?

Thanks in advance

Re: How to remove powder coating residue ?

I would try something like a parts cleaner brush with long stiff bristles to push it out of small areas.

They are cheap and easy to find at any auto parts store.

That, or blast it off instead of chemical stripping.

Let us know what you found to work.

Thanks Sir Jay V, Even though I didnt follow your advice, I still think that your method is the most viable one. What I did was that I used a small leaf screw driver and scrub off the residue int the tough spot like corners and holes. It took a lot of time though, so I would recommend this method for patient people only. But the result was pretty good. I also used sanding paper to scrub off easy access area

Depending on how stubborn the finish is, blasting a complex piece like that may be the quickest and easiest way.

Lots of coaters will chemically strip first, then blast to remove the remaining coating in the difficult areas, as well as to provide a good surface profile on the part.

Re: How to remove powder coating residue ?

Powder Coating Removal can be accomplished best by chemical removal. Options are placing the entire part in a stripping solution for 30-minutes to 3-hours and sometimes overnight at room temperature. For faster stripping you can apply heat to the stripping solution from 150F-200F, strip time drops down to 10-20 minutes.  Rinse with water and recoat the like new finish as a first run part again! or Clean hooks on a daily basis In-House and reuse clean hooks everyday.

Provide economical concentrates that can be used with 50% water and still strip as effectively as a 100% stripping chemical.

The other option is to apply a thickened stripping solution to the surface and let sit for 3-hours or forget about it overnight and remove the loose under-cut powder coating with a rag, or rinse with water or pressure washer with high pressure water.

Re: How to remove powder coating residue ?

Think about your Safety, before using  “Gasket Removers” to remove paint & for powder coating removal.

The suggested use of “Gasket Remover” for removing powder coating has been a topic in many powder coating removal–blog comments, lately.    www.MilesChemicalSolutions.com  offers Consumers, Manufacturers and Custom Finishers safer, eco-friendly paint strippers and powder coating removal product alternatives.

Buyer Be Ware;

When handling and applying Gasket Removers for any application, including powder coating removal. What most people do not know without actually reviewing the Material Safety Data Sheets, Hazards Section, is that “Gasket Remover” is made up primarily from a chlorinated solvent called DICHLOROMETHANE, which is a suspect carcinogen, which means; it is suspected to cause cancer in animals as well as being toxic to your vital organs by (inhalation)-breathing the volatile vapors during use. Many of these types of products also contain Hazardous Air Pollutants, which is not friendly to the atmosphere that we all breathe and share.

Past paint stripping technologies were based on this same chlorinated solvent, synonymously called Methylene Chloride. This is a chemical that I personally would stay away from utilizing to remove paint and powder coating, with all the safer alternatives, that are readily available today.

There is good news, we at www.MilesChemicalSolutions.com, provide a variety of eco-friendly: Green type stripping solutions for stripping paint, varnish removers and to remove powder coating.
