Topic: need help with tiger two coat neon red

Hey guys im powdercoating some motorcycle wheels in neon red with white basecoat.  I've never used tiger powder before so i sure could use some input.  Should i put down my basecoat, full cure, cool down, then neon red, full cure.  Or should i partially cure the basecoat, pull out of oven, shoot red while warm, then back in oven to finish.  I normally use eastwood powder and it bakes for 20 min. after it reaches 400 degrees f.  Any input would be appreciated

Thanks for all the input guys!!!  I think i'll go back to the eastwood forum where i can actually get some help.

Easy there killer.  Give it another few days for an answer, or contact your local Tiger rep directly if you need help ASAP.  Travis is usually pretty good about helping people with their problems, but he might not check the forums every single day.

Dear ACPC,

There are OEM wheel manufacturers doing what you are talking about but they have chemists.  I have seen really good results with slightly under curing the base coat and then finishing it off with the final cure of the top coat.  Give it a try on a test piece would be my recommendation, but I think you have the right idea with the partial cure.

Re: need help with tiger two coat neon red

Several issues here.

First off, Eastwood makes none of their own powder.

Second, as far as a recommended system, here is the way to proceed.

1. properly pretreat substrate and then dry off

2. apply white base coat and 1/2-3/4 cure

3. allow to cool and immediately apply neon topcoat

4. fully cure neon topcoat

One thing that must be noted about neon colors is that if you have a part with varying metal thicknesses (gokart frame, motorcycle frame etc) you may see different shades of color post cure. This is a normal phenomenon that takes place due to the pigments exposure to different levels of heat history in relationship to metal thickness.

Full curing the base coat prior to applying the top coat often leads to intercoat adhesion issues and delamination of the coats once in use. Not a positive outcome.

I hope this helps.
