Topic: Question: what is the difference of Zinc plating and Galvanize?

Monica nice to see you again;

Zinc plating is electroplating where the parts are cathotic drawing the zinc from anodes of zinc appling a thin smooth layer for decrotive and protective uses.

Galvanizing is a system where zink is melted itno a molten form and the parts are fluxed and dipped into the molten bath and thenremoved to cool. This applies a thicker and rougher finish, galvanizing is a self sacrificing finish whitch means that it oxidizes instead of the part under the coating.

Not to confuse you and this question anymore - but in many places around the world Zinc Electroplating is referred to as Galvanizing. Im not sure what they call the molten zinc kind of galvanizing....??

Thanks very much Jim.

It seemed that i got some points, but still a little confused :(

So Zinc plating is just the same process as the other metal electroplating like nickel, if so, i really got it.

As for Galvanizing, what you said about the "melted form" and "self sacrificing" , does it mean that the under-coated metal(ferrum for example) gets the "zinc component" from the real pure zinc metal? Am i understood by the description? I am not very sure if there is any mistakes.

Monica:

I am not sure if it is pure zinc but it is mostly zinc. This is not really my expertise, I have never personally done galvanizing but would send parts to have it done for a large contract my company had.

So i guess my understanding is almost correct.

Zinc plating means the metal gets the Zinc layer from some chemicals while Galvanzing means the metal gets the zinc layer from the melted zinc metal.
