Topic: Ideal Coating for Motorcycle Headers

I have a 500cc Kawasaki Ninja with rusty headers (I lived awhile in an apartment and had to park it in the rain... I know I'm bad).

I need to get the rust removed and would like to get the headers refinished, but don't really have any idea what kind of coating to look into. Since it's a sportbike and not a cruiser, I'd like to stay away from chrome. They're not super-visible either because of the plastics, so I'm looking for a coating more for protection from future rust than something for appearance, but something pretty would be nice for the visible bits. Also, since it's a smaller 2-cylinder engine I don't imagine the headers would get quite as hot as they would on a bigger bike or a high-performance car.

I noticed in the other thread I found that mentioned headers specifically someone said darker colors seem to hold up better for high-heat applications, which is fine, black would be my preferred color anyways.

So, I guess my question is what sort of finish should I put on the headers after removing the rust?

Talk to you local powder coating shop. Many of them also spray high-temp ceramic coatings which should be ideal for what you are looking for. Make sure they use a top quality pretreatment cycle, which should include media blasting (to remove the rust), some sort of iron or zinc phosphate, and perhaps a primer (if applicable).

Re: Ideal Coating for Motorcycle Headers

Clean and coat with a 'Frit' type coating...check with the Hot Rod folks.

Skip was nosing around and found "this about that."-->

Re: powder coating over high temp paint.

high heat paints usually contain silicone so anything on top of it will have adherence problems. even if the powder would stick to the high heat paint any clear would turn yellow in no time.
