Re: surface treatment for Pistons

Hi,

I am a new member of this forum, I want to share a problem with all fo you with this hope, someone will show me the right path. I am good in manufacturing high silicon aluminum alloy parts but I don't know which type of surface treatments can be given. how cleaning should be done after heatreatment. I don't know where should I go? Who can help me? how I can found the solution of surface treatment problems. I am a layman in this field except some general knowledge. Please suggest me some solution.

[color="DarkSlateBlue"]Hello alnico4u,

Please tell us a little more about what you are trying to accomplish..... are you only looking to remove heat treat scale, or do you have a further defined spec of what you are trying to achieve in terms of cleaning after heat treating?  Please let us know what is and what is not acceptable in the finished product.

Re: surface treatment for Pistons

Hi, Paul,

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. Ok I tell you one by one my problems.

First

I am trying to remove the heat treated scales/oxide layer from the internal side of the piston becasue this side doesn't get any machining operation as compared to outer side. Actually when ever I compare internal side of my pistons to any other manufacturer I found that my pistons have stains and the surface is dull. It is not good esthatically. But other's pistons have shining like orignal aluminum or color like that. I don't know exactly what is this.

you may ask any question. if still you cann't understand me.

Second

I have seen various coatings on pistons but I don't know thier exact names but I can guess their names lik Oxidated piston, phosphated pistons, grahite coated pistons and stannate pistons etc. I don't know how can i access to these method.

Please do suggest me some solution.

Regards,
Alnico
