Re: Need Help Plating Nickel over Nickel [ Started by William S in Decorative Plating : 7 replies ]
You could use a cyanide activator. Same principle as when dummying a bright nickel tank with previously used dummies. Activate with cyanide activator to keep chunks from sloughing off the dummies into the solution. Just make sure you are equipt to deal with the cyanide waste treatment.

Welcome to the world of plating. Good luck with your venture. What area are you starting up in? What type of materials do you plan on plating? What size? How many employees? How many customers? There are a lot of used equipment dealers out there and a lot of potential for turning a junk pile into a gold mine but I would definitely give some thought to what your customer base will be and what your goals are for your shop. If you are doing this to do your own plating and cut out the middle man, the cost may be a lot more than you anticipate. If you are looking to go competitive and get in deep into plating you are going to have to put together a serious plan. I have worked in a few plating shops and have seen a lot of processes including plating, phosphating, anodizing and even vibratory finish. I have seen finishing lines that were set up very well with a lot of forethought as to the maintenance and versatility of the set up. I have also seen plating lines that were squeezed …
Re: Filter recommendation needed [ Started by CaptainTripz in Electroplating : 0 replies ]
I plate aluminum parts for which I use an acid desmutter that contains ammonium biflouride, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid. With this kind of mixture I have found it near impossible to find a filter for this solution. Anyone have a recommendation based on actual usage?
Re: Nickel Recycling [ Started by CaptainTripz in Marketplace : 1 replies ]
Anyone know a reliable and professional recycling company? Preferrably in the midwest Illinois and surrounding states region? My first concern is nickel since prices have soared and we still have dummying procedures necessary to our operation. And I just HAVE to try one of these faces out.... so....

Donovan,
Good information. I trust in keeping up with new technology you came across a product called the Nikotect which is the unit we run from Atotech. It does not dummy or provide peroxide treatment. It uses an adsober polymer to remove contaminants. In addition to this I have heard that another company is developing a similar system that will also remove Aluminum from nickel baths. This is important to us since we have to do high pH treatment with lithium hydroxide which generates a huge amount of sludge although not as much as Ni Carbonate. While the amount of sludge is necessary it is not exactly pant-loads of fun for our pollution control fellas. As you can understand, we are a little curious about how well this stuff works.
Check the article "Shining Up Bright Nickel Baths" (http://www.pfonline.com/articles/120201.html) about a large plating shop with a lot of nickel plating. Our goal is to get to where this company is with nickel maintenance.
Thanks …

OK so Zurv wants a debatable thread started according to a feedback thread that I posted. So maybe this will work:
I have read a couple articles and a bunch of technical data on nickel purification systems. The articles and tech sheets boast the claim that it reduces the need to do full carbon treatments, to tear down and repack filters, and other maintenance tasks such as "dummying" (at the current price of nickel a rather expensive treatment this is becoming.)
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I have spoken with others in the plating industry whom I have worked with and trust and they have told me that the claims are not true and prevent proper bath maintenance. In as much as I trust people, people are often just opposed to change so I have tried to rely on my own experience with these purification systems (and by experience I mean that I am just now getting acquainted with one.)
My shop currently runs one of these units made by Atotech. Although we use this machine r …

I like this site and it seems it has a lot of potential. I am more interested to see troubleshooting approaches and solutions used with defects in electroplating. I have seen some very basic electoplating posts and generic bath engineering posts, but I am hoping to see some of the members posts issues they have with more detailed electroplating engineering. Also I hope to be able to compare notes on some process chemistry that others use and which proprietaries they have had the most success with.
