Re: Who wants to talk Electropolishing? [ Started by MikeCochara in Other : 15 replies ]

Are you sure you have a solution that is suitable for Al?? Most EP solutions are for SS only. Breaking in the solution is the same as "seeding" the solution which is really all about the metal content in the bath and can be measured in Specific Gravity. There is tons of info online about EP. You should check out the website for Metal Coating Process Corporation for starters.

Good luck.

Re: Heaters plating up [ Started by D.T. in Electroplating : 15 replies ]

Back to the heaters plating up....... here is what we do in our tanks.

We actually use a separate axillary rectifier such as a laboratory or hull cell rectifier. You would not want to use a large capacity rectifier because all you need to impose is a very small "trickle" of direct current.

An anodic charge should be imposed on the outside shell of the titanium (or stainless) heater above the solution level. We run a small wire from the cathodic side of the axillary rectifier to a small piece of carbon and place this carbon cathode within about 6" of the heater. Then we adjust the output of the axillary rectifier to about 1/2 volt dc. This small secondary electrical input should have no side effects. It is important that the wire connections to the heater and carbon cathode be above the solution level. At the voltage I recommend, you will see only see about 1 ampere. The amperage is limited by the size of the cathode.

The shell of the heater is connected to the factory gro …

Hey Walker - I'd like to see pics of this machine you are describing too.

Sounds interesting.

Re: I am Subrata Bhar from Kolkata, India, Hello to you all. [ Started by Subrata Bhar in General Discussion : 10 replies ]

Hello Subrata,

Welcome to the Finishing Talk Forum! We are pleased to have you as a fellow member. What is metal finishing like in Kolkata? Are there many other metal finishing - powder coating and plating shops in your town? Do you have a metal finishing organization (club or association) that meets in your city? Does it have environmental laws and concerns as we do in the US?

As to your question..... I would look into White Bronze as a non-nickel replacement. This is an old automotive plating process that is being resurrected to be used now because of the new European laws pertaining to Ni that touches the skin. Carolina Process Control (CPC) is a member here and I know they have experience with that process. You should message them. Good luck and welcome.

Has anyone heard the latest on the market price (now and future) for High Grade Zinc anodes?

What kind of pricing have you been quoted recently?

Thanks to anyone who can share...

I for one would be interested in this type of education. And I wonder what is already out there??? Do any courses like this exist - anywhere in the world?? Feedback from the Finishing Talk Community would be interesting.......

Re: Carbon treatment to adsorb organic impurities [ Started by finishingmarket.com in Electroplating : 4 replies ]

Thanks for sharing that information - I've often thought about these very same issues. We have small tanks and use constant filtration with flo-king filters. When I need to carbon treat I add a carbon filter to the flo-king.

When does this equipment need to be removed from where it is at?

Re: The Perfect Storm Ahead for AESF [ Started by Jerry Phillips in Metal Finishing Associations : 2 replies ]

Being a Civil War buff I do like your analogy. But I think Fort Sumter was when our (out of control BOD) voted to accept the merger..... that is where the real first shot was fired from the traitors. Sur-Fin 07 will be more like Gettysburg!

Since when did the AESF BOD start working for the other associations? Aren't they supposed to look out for the AESF membership first? Thank God we have a Council of Delegates left to protect the members.

Re: Removing Anodize Coating [ Started by metfinoh in Anodizing : 5 replies ]

I should have said in the begining - we are currently using our etch tank for stripping racks. This causes the etch tank to get worn out much faster and sometimes eats the racks..... There must be a more controled/safe way to do this. I am planning to try that AN775 rack strip product from finishingmarket and will let you know how it goes.

Re: Removing Anodize Coating [ Started by metfinoh in Anodizing : 5 replies ]

Does anyone know the best way to remove an anodized coating and prep the part for a new one. I would very much like to use anything other than nitric acid, due to its availability and toxcicity. Thanks for your help.
