Best U.S. Manufacturing Jobs in Rising Jeopardy

A new round of cutbacks by Detroit's automakers carries a larger message -- that America's manufacturing workers are under new pressure in jobs where labor unions had once been able to command middle-class wages for assembly-line jobs.
The point was punctuated this week as General Motors announced the largest ever annual loss by a maker of automobiles. In a bid to restore profitability, GM said it would offer incentives to convince older, highly paid assembly workers to retire early. Ford and Chrysler are pursuing similar worker buyouts.
The moves signal what some analysts say is an accelerating effort to trim wages and workforces. Essentially, the old Big Three are becoming a much smaller three. The pressures facing Detroi …

Re: Electronic Recycling Companies that Don't Recycle - Beware [ Started by Finishing Talk in General Discussion : 0 replies ]
Posted on the Environmental Resource Center website - 1/14/2008
In the wake of the Christmas electronic-gadget buying season, the Basel Action Network (BAN) and the Electronics TakeBack Coalition (ETBC) are cautioning consumers not to be fooled by the majority of nationwide businesses that call themselves electronics recyclers when in fact they don’t do any recycling, but ship old equipment to developing countries.
“We may think we’re doing the right thing by giving our old electronics to a ‘recycler’ or a free collection event,” said Sarah Westervelt, BAN’s e-Stewardship Program Director. “But most of those businesses calling themselves recyclers are little more than international waste distributors. They take your old equipment for free, or pocket your recycling fee, and then simply load it into a sea-going container and ship it to China, India, or Nigeria.”
According to BAN, once on foreign shores, you …

Re: Plasma arc gasification as a waste treatment technology? [ Started by Paul Fisher in Waste Water Treatment : 1 replies ]
From what I've read about Plasma Arc Gasification (as well as pyrolysis and catalytic cracking) these processes are basically a spin off of incinerators, which are environmentally unsound. Here is an interesting set of case studies compiled in 2006 that discuss these technologies in further detail. Re: EPA Proposes SPCC Rule Amendments [ Started by Finishing Talk in Regulations : 0 replies ]
EPA has proposed amendments to the SPCC (Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure) rule on October 1, 2007 that will increase clarity and tailor certain requirements for easier and increased compliance. All SPCC-regulated facilities, including metal finishers storing 1,320 gallons or more of oil (including the volumes in transformers and capacitors) would be potentially affected by the proposed amendments to provide:
• clarity on the general secondary containment requirements
• flexibility in the security requirements
• flexibility in the use of industry standards to comply with integrity testing requirements
• additional flexibility in meeting the facility diagram requirements
• clarification on the flexibility provided by the definition of “facility.”
In addition to the amendments listed above, EPA is proposing to exempt the following from SPCC regulations:
• hot-mix asphalt and hot-mix asphalt c …

Re: CyberCoating 2007 – A New Avenue or a Dead End? [ Started by Finishing Talk in General Discussion : 0 replies ]
It seems that everything is being swept into the infinite arena of cyberspace these days. Years ago, our forms of communication expanded to include the modern marvel of electronic mail. Today, the ability to have video board meetings with clients overseas has made it more cost efficient to simply conduct business from the comfort of your own office.
The ability to be two places at once is something humans have longed to have (and has been the brunt of many sarcastic rebuttals – “I can’t be in two places at once, you know!”) since the dawn of our existence. As we begin to develop new technologies that make this increasingly possible, it is interesting to watch as innovations come out of the woodwork. Take CyberCoating 2007, for example. This 3-D, virtual, online trade show was held in Cyberspace (Can’t you see that becoming a new location? Somewhere on par with those two-letter, postal code, state abbreviations we had to remember in middle school – IL, CA, OH, AZ…CS?) from October 1 …

About a week ago I was scrolling through my select list of recorded television shows (TiVo is a God send). I settled on an episode about Future Fuels showcased during the Discovery Science channel’s “Eco-Tech” week. Among the technologies mentioned, including jet fuel derived from trap grease in New York City, and cellulosic ethanol produced by modifying E. coli bacteria to produce alcohol from wood chips, there was one fuel source that I thought had an especially interesting twist. We all know about hydrogen and the possibilities surrounding it as a future fuel source – if only it wasn’t so unstable. Perhaps a common metal is the answer to this problem.
Purdue University engineer Jerry Woodall, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, discovered that liquid alloys of aluminum and gallium spontaneously produce hydrogen if mixed with water. By adding water to a small tank containing pellets …

Re: Eco-Efficiency in the Metal Finishing Industry [ Started by Finishing Talk in General Discussion : 2 replies ]
(From the August edition of Southern Metal Finishing)
Efficiency is always an important factor in any industrial sector; cutting down on material, chemical, energy, and waste management costs is a welcome consequence of making your business more eco-efficient. Due to the heavy use of chemicals, large amounts of water, and the hazardous waste produced through finishing processes, the metal finishing industry is an ideal candidate for improving its eco-efficiency. This can be achieved by changing processes, finding alternatives, and reducing or eliminating the generation of toxic wastes instead of focusing on managing it later on.
The number of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes alike can be greatly reduced through the implementation of even minor practices. Interestingly enough, the most significant gains have been made through process control and operating practices rather than through the use of new technology. Substituting cyanide with non-cyanide, for example, and hexav …
