Topic: Marketing Trends: Tapping in to new media outlets [ Started by Finishing Talk in General Discussion : 0 replies ]
From the May 2008 issue of Finishing Talk
We’ve all heard the buzz surrounding popular internet media venues such as You Tube, been among the hoards of people tapping into the virtual phenomenon of social networking sites, and marked Google as our homepage to conduct our internet searches with ease. We also know what happens when high concentrations of people flock to one location – advertisements spring up. They may be subtle at first, appearing sparingly as small banner ads flashing silently along the edges of your screen. Then pop-up boxes emerging out of nowhere, followed by the mandatory preliminary ad spot before you watch an online video clip. They appear as you wait to be redirected from one webpage to the next – brief intermissions, like those of the old drive-in theatres, beckoning you to grab a box of popcorn and some Sno-Caps from the nearby snack counter. Currently, the dominant force in onli …
Topic: Export Strength Bolsters US Manufacturing [ Started by Finishing Talk in Manufacturing : 0 replies ]
Article from manufacturing.netARLINGTON, Va. -- According to a Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI report, manufacturing could fare better than the U.S. economy due to continuing strength in exports. The report forecasts GDP growth will slow to 1.3 percent in 2008 before improving to 1.9 percent in 2009. “The 2008 recession looks like it is going to be milder and more prolonged rather than normal,” said Daniel J. Meckstroth, Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI Chief Economist. “The large, but temporary, tax rebates and massive monetary policy easing will interrupt an economic downturn in the second and third quarters of this year but will unwind in late 2008 and …

EPA Proposes New Air Emissions Standards for Plating and Polishing Area Sources
On March 14, 2008, EPA issued a proposed rule for plating and polishing area sources. The plating and polishing processes that are subject to the proposed plating and polishing area source rule are those processes performed at an affected plating and polishing facility that uses or has the potential to emit any compound of any of the following metal HAPs: cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese and nickel. Processes that use other metals are not subject to the requirements of this proposed rule. Similarly, processes that are currently subject to the Chromium MACT standard are not subject to the proposed area source requirements.
After numerous discussions between EPA officials and NASF leadership, EPA has developed a proposed rule that imposes standards to ensure continued reductions of potential metal HAP compound emissions from plating and polishing processes. It also appears that the pro …

Tecumseh Products Leaves Hometown
By Erik Gable and David Panian, Associated Press writers
Manufacturing.Net - March 25, 2008
TECUMSEH, Mich. (AP) -- When the last employees leave Tecumseh Products Co.'s East Patterson Street location later this year, it will mark the end of an age for the city of Tecumseh and the company that bears its name.
Tecumseh Products says its global headquarters will move to the Valley Ranch Business Park in Pittsfield Township near Ann Arbor. The decision follows an announcement in November that the company, which makes refrigeration compressors, would shut down its local manufacturing operations this year, moving the work to other plants in North America.
The company's exit from its longtime home was not the death blow it would have been in years past. The company no longer dominates Lenawee County's economy the way it once did; its work force has dwindled to 300 or so people, most of them in its corporate offic …

Originally published in the March 2008 issue of the Finishing Talk Newsletter
Across the U.S. and around the globe, large companies are taking it upon themselves to shrink their environmental footprint - a dramatic and important step towards a cleaner, and more environmentally sound future. Realizing that it's not just regulations that are forcing the change, but an equally worrisome rise in energy costs and quality issues, manufacturers are taking matters into their own hands. And they are starting with their suppliers.
According to a recent survey of supply chain professionals carried out for eyefortransport's "Green Transportation and Logistics Report", green issues are rated by 94% of executives as a business priority. This is occurring in response to the high demand by large manufacturers - corporate giants such as Wal-Mart who are leading the way by revaluating and reorganizing their current supply chain (which is responsible …
