Topic: Overplating with Electroless Nickel
We have steel components plated in our inventory with chromium-6 free zinc chromate. One customer is requesting that these items be plated using an electroless nickel process. Is it possible to over plate with electroless nickel, or must the existing zinc chromate plating be removed?

Re: Overplating with Electroless Nickel
It must be stripped. The chromate is a passivate, which will prevent any adhesion from any subsequent plating operations. The chromate is also gelatenous, which further makes for a poor base material. And going through most pretreatment processes (cleaner, acid, etc), can significantly affect the chromate.
Bottom line, stripping is easy and cheap, and required.

I agree with what Dustin said with one exception.... don't forget about waste treat. A lot of stripping could upset the balance down the line. Make sure that you have a serious discussion with your WT operator before you quote a job like this.
