Topic: How do you test for Tin in a plating bath?

Anyone know how to test for tin in a plating bath? Can u do it by AA or a wet test?

We use a wet method for our tin-nickel bath.  Our operating range in normally 0.5 - 0.75opg, so adjust your sample size and factor accordingly.

1.Pipette exactly 50 mL of hot sample into a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask.

2.Dilute with approximately 25 mL of de-ionized water

3.Add 5 mL concentrated hydrochloric acid and two droppers of starch. Mix and IMMEDIATELY begin the next step

4.Titrate drop by drop (no faster than 1 drop per second) with .05 N potassium iodate to the very first drop that gives you a color change (purple or blue)

mL Potassium Iodate * 0.03635 = oz/gallon of tin

Is this for your cyanide bronze?  If it is you better have some good  ventilation when you add the hcl.  There has to be a better way.  You might need to check with Hach or somebody.

Yes it is with my cyanide bronze tank. Thank you for your response. I came across one something like that. Was hopping for a safer and easier way to do it.
