Meanwhile, Nickel rose to the highest in at least 19 years as a blockade by strikers at two mines owned by Eramet SA on the Pacific Island of New Caledonia limited supply of the metal used to make stainless steel.

Nickel for delivery in three months on the London Metal Exchange rose $150, or 0.5 percent, to $30,900 a metric ton on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier it traded at $31,300, the highest since at least 1987, according to Bloomberg data. The metal has more than doubled in the past year.

Other metals also gained. Copper for delivery in three months gained $80, or 1.1 percent, to $7,540 a ton on the LME. Aluminum increased $6 to $2,641, and zinc gained $35 to $3,825. Lead added $13 to $1,505, while tin rose $50 to $9,825.
