Assuming you are referring to stainless steel, electropolishing involves anodically dissolving the microscopic "peaks" of the substrate surface to match the "valleys", resulting in a completely smooth surface. It also removes the free iron from the surface, passivating the stainless steel.
If it is "contact-free", it is no longer an electropolish, but a chemical polish. I have tried many proprietary chemical polishes for SS but have found none that match the finish of an electropolished substrate.
If there is a new chemical polish on the market claiming to match the finish obtained from electropolishing, please post the information, as I would like to experiment with this as well.
